Field Observation

Tasks set
Our goal is to collect data regarding the integral user experience of a product in the context of everyday life. Our basic assumption is:


Method
Respondents will be observed in the natural context of their technology-usage (e.g. workplace, home, etc.). The observation can be expanded by means of a contextual inquiry.

Especially short-term projects profit from a standardisation of the observations: it is determined before the study what is important and conducive to the formulation of questions.

Ideally, two test heads should join to conduct the field visits. This is advisable, especially when the observation is supplemented with a context-related enquiry.

Process phase


Sample
This is an intensive, mainly qualitative method that has already achieved excellent results with small samples. 4 to 5 users per target group are recommendable.

Timing
Depending on the type of problem a few weeks may suffice; long-term studies will demand several months.
