Hybrid Testing

Tasks set
The hybrid test approach allows generating valid quantitative indices as well as extensive qualitative recommendations geared to optimising an interface within the framework of a single test:

The user experience of an interface as to the dimensions usability, utility, design, brand, and joy of use is measured by means of indices especially developed for this purpose.
Within the framework of a long-term quality assurance and control those indices permit a continual comparison of the interface on the timeline and/or as compared with competing products. Furthermore the effectiveness of optimisation measures is examined and documented.
The qualitative results contribute to a lasting improvement of the interface.

Method
Individual interviews are conducted that combine observation, interviews, and qualitative post-explorations:

During sessions the respondents work on tasks that reflect the core functionality of the interface.
In the process of solving those tasks, the usability indices are obtained by observation.
After finishing their tasks, the participants have to evaluate especially devised statements regarding the dimensions utility, design, brand, and joy of use.
Moreover, usability problems within the sphere of the tasks are post-explored in qualitative respect.

Sample
The sample should include a minimum of 20 to 30 respondents. The greater the sample size, the more stable the test results and the more reliable is the assessment of differences in mean value from one wave to another regarding their significance. As to qualitative problems, 10 participants per target group should be appointed; in case of smaller sample sizes, additional online surveys can be employed.

Timing
Depending on the sample size, the study can be conducted within 6 weeks (N=20-30) or rather 12 weeks (N=150).
