Paper Prototyping

Tasks set
Paper prototyping is particularly suited to shed light on the following questions early on in the process of development:

  • Does the system depict all necessary and desired functions?
  • Are the individual functions of the interface prioritised correctly?
  • Are the basic sequences of the interface correct? Do they meet the expectations?
  • Does the layout of the separate screens work?

Early screenshots, or rather very simple, usually non-functional prototypes serve as material for testing.

Method
The results will be applied to the process of development immediately only if the development team takes an active part in the tests.

  • Scenario-supported test sessions with individual participants usually span about 90 minutes.
  • It is crucial to define clearly the process of interaction (What happens when?), as well as translating it into rough drafts of screens, menus, drop-downs, etc.
  • The respondents use the system as if it really existed, "think out loud," and indicate parts they would click on.
  • After a short phase of settling in participants usually embark on the scenario completely.
  • Since the overall atmosphere is creative, the respondents develop many productive proposals, above-average.

Process phase

Sample
The sample size should include a minimum of 8 to 10 participants. Similar to "rapid prototyping" the design may be changed in between the test sessions.

Timing
In accordance with the sample size. A study consisting of 10 respondents can be realised within 2 to 3 weeks.
