Use Cases

Tasks set
Based on typical courses of usage use cases are employed at the beginning of a developmental process to define objectives and requirements for a product that is to be developed. Use cases describe courses of use as exerted by certain target groups to reach a goal with the help of a product. They allow us to derive necessary functions and requirements for applications. Thus, apart from personas or rather from a precise definition of the target group, use cases form an essential component of a successful design.

Further advantages of use cases:

Use cases present a dynamic instrument and are constantly verified, modified, and expanded. As a means of quality assurance they enable us to co-ordinate the present state with the objective during and after the developmental process. Moreover, use cases form the basis for scenarios of user experience tests.

Method
A knowledge, as accurate as possible, of the target group (preferably in the form of personas) and its motivation is a prerequisite for the creation of use cases. Besides, the prioritisation of use cases is crucial in gearing the interface towards the target group.

No final users are involved in the creation of use cases. Nonetheless, the collection of data concerning final users may be inevitable in the run-up, e.g. by means of:
