User Experience Testing
Tasks set
The user experience test follows a qualitative approach and investigates the entirety of user experiences surrounding the use of an application. Pivotal factors are the suitability as regards the utility on the functional level as well as soft aspects like the emotional response to the interface, joy of use and trust. A user experience test is supposed to:
- investigate acute problems of using the interface
- answer optional questions such as design and layout, the depth of information and motivation for usage.
Method
Test sessions with respondents are conducted which are a conjunction of observation, enquiry and subjective evaluation.
- During the test sessions the participants work on tasks that are a reflection of the core functionality of the interface.
- An usability expert observes the respondents while they work on the tasks.
- At the same time the participants are asked to "think aloud" to clarify the motivations underlying their actions.
- After each task the test head and the participant review and reflect upon occurring usability problems in a qualitative post-enquiry.
- Following the tasks, the respondents evaluate specific statements about the application's usability, utility value, design, relation to the brand, and the fun factor.
Process phase
The user experience test can be employed during all stages of the life cycle of a product but may also accompany the developing process as a method:
- Conception: to gain a profound insight into usability problems and requirements on the users' part early on
- Implementation: release test
- Live-System: controlling the offer
- Before the re-launch: status quo "learn for the future from mistakes"
Sample
The sample size varies according to the test object and the goals of the test:
- If questions of usability are at the forefront of the study 8 to 10 participants per target group are recommended.
- If the evaluation of the design and layout or of the preparation, amount, and type of information are of crucial importance, at least 20 respondents ought to be interviewed
Timing
Depending on the sample size the study may be conducted within 3 to 4 weeks (N=10 to 15), or rather 4 to 5 weeks (N=20).
