In an international study the mobile team of SirValUse tested the usefulness of an innovative mobile phone menu navigation with the focus on software and hardware aspects. Our customer wanted to assure that the direction he chose was the one to be followed further and asked our experts for an advice on which improvements would offer the most benefit for his customers.
In order to find this out we conducted eleven face-to-face user experience tests (90 minutes each) in three European countries in which the test persons carried out numerous typical tasks. These were presented in rotation in order to distribute learn effects equally. Our experts observed the participants and explored their motivations as well as the mental models behind their visible behavior.
The results contained a complete and detailed description of the problems the participants had in operating the menu. We commented e.g. on the design of the menus, the usage of touch screens, the layout of screen keypads, the size and labeling of keys and gave detailed recommendations for improvements. Quantitative data, such as success rate and subjective satisfaction regarding the "ease of use" helped our customer to evaluate the performance of his concept and to set priorities in the further development. The customer gained valuable insights in the users' behavior of three European markets.
