OTTO was the first customer to use the newly developed "Remote Testing" method for the optimisation of the navigation concept in it's online shop under www.otto.de. The aim of the test was to examine various navigation alternatives for comprehensibility and orientation.
For this purpose, OTTO developed alternatives to the existing navigation structure which were subjected to comparative tests within a two week period. Via a pop-up window almost 1,000 OTTO online shop users agreed to participate in the remote test.
The new "Remote-Testing" usability test method allows users to participate in usability tests at home. Users call up the test web site during a private internet visit, and are invited to participate in the test by a pop-up. The usability test takes place immediately and without any further software installation in the user's own PC. Thus, the method allows access to user groups that are difficult to reach, increases the number of participants, and the costs are reduced. Furthermore, click paths, mouse movements, screenshots and the users' entries can be reproduced which means you have an accurate record of what the test subjects actually did.
The remote testing method combines a task-oriented part and a questionnaire. The task oriented section is able to reveal differences between objective and subjective perception, and the questionnaire helps to find reasons why some tasks are not able to be completed. You can find more detailed information about Remote Testing in the Methods section of our website.
